 오로라(aurora borealis)
남극이나 북극의 지방 100km 이상 고공에 나타나는 방전현상으로 태양 면이 폭발 할 때 튀어나온 대전입자가 방전오로라(aurora borealis) 의 원인이 되면서 극광(極光 aurora borealis)을 일으키는 아주 아름답고 찬란한 빛을 펼치는 것을 말한다.
‘오로라’라는 말은 라틴(Latin)어 ‘아우로라(aurora)’를 그대로 따온 말로
“해가 뜬다(sunrise)"의 뜻을 가지고 있다.
이 현상이 일어날 때는 전파가 방해되며 신호가 반사되든지 아니면 찌그러지며,
극성의 변화가 심해 그곳을 지나는 비행기는 막대한 장애를 일으키게 된다.
특히 VHF든 UHF에 예민한 반응을 일으킨다고 한다.
